Reflecting on the word"ren"
1)selfless activity brings us together.
2)Compassion is the fragrance of our self
conscious being.

To my understanding, the “ren” consist of two characters.
Human, and the number “two”.
Which means two human.
When two human meets, respects, compassions, kindness and consideration is needed in order to stay harmoniously.
When there is not respect whatsoever, the two human will go separate way, then the “ren” cease to exist.

Thank you both for your comments on "ren." Because I don't speak Chinese, the inner meaning of this term was new to me. Compassion, such sweet fragrance, arises from harmonious meeting. Without this fundamental harmony, where is compassion?

  • Zen teachers sometimes use the Ten Ox Herding Pictures to describe the path of awakening. Within this metaphorical framework, the ox symbolizes the secretive, unruly human mind.
